sleep apnea, what is it and how do we fix it

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you may have sleep apnea.

There are three types of sleep apnea:

1. Obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax

2. Central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to the muscles that control your breathing

3. Mixed sleep apnea, which is a combination of both obstructive and central sleep apneas

Most people with sleep apnea don’t know they have it because it can only be diagnosed with a sleep study. However, there are some common signs and symptoms, which include:

– Loud snoring

– Gasping for air during sleep

– Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat

– Morning headaches

– Difficulty concentrating during the day

– Falling asleep during the day

If you think you might have sleep apnea, it’s important to see a doctor so you can get treated. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

There are two main types of treatment for sleep apnea:

1. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which involves wearing a mask over your nose and mouth while you sleep. The mask is connected to a machine that delivers air pressure to keep your airways open.

2. Oral appliance therapy, which involves wearing a mouthpiece that helps keep your airway open while you sleep.

Your doctor will work with you to find the best treatment for your sleep apnea. In some cases, a combination of treatments may be necessary.
